Assessment Procedures for Voice, Articulation and Phonological, and Fluency Disorders: A Comprehensive Review of Contemporary Clinical Practices

Abstract
Assessment plays a pivotal role in the accurate diagnosis and effective management of communication disorders, including voice disorders, articulation and phonological disorders, and fluency disorders. This systematic review synthesizes contemporary evidence on clinical assessment procedures by examining traditional perceptual methods, standardized diagnostic instruments, instrumental evaluations, patient-reported outcome measures, and emerging technology-assisted approaches. The review follows the PRISMA framework and includes peer-reviewed literature published between 2015 and 2026 from major databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ERIC, and Google Scholar.
The findings indicate that multidimensional assessment models integrating perceptual evaluation, acoustic and aerodynamic analysis, laryngeal imaging, standardized assessment tools, and functional communication measures provide greater diagnostic accuracy than single-method approaches. Furthermore, recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, automated speech analysis, and telepractice have significantly enhanced screening efficiency, objective evaluation, and accessibility of assessment services, particularly for underserved populations. However, challenges remain regarding clinical validation, standardization, cultural and linguistic appropriateness, ethical implementation, and equitable access to advanced technologies. The review emphasizes the importance of evidence-based, person-centered, and technology-supported assessment frameworks that combine clinical expertise with objective diagnostic tools. Future research should focus on multilingual validation, explainable artificial intelligence, standardized telepractice protocols, and the development of culturally responsive assessment systems to improve diagnostic precision and communication outcomes across diverse populations.
